A top researcher at KEMRI was confirmed dead after armed thugs raided New Rainbow Restaurant, a pub along the busy Kisumu-Busia highway, where he alongside other football fans were watching a World Cup match on Friday night.
News reaching KISUMUINSYDER.CO.KE reveal that Peter Odada Sumba succumbed to bullet wounds on 17th, Sunday morning at the Aga Khan hospital.
The thugs shot him twice, on the stomach and on his leg.
The football lovers were attacked by a group of six men at around half past 11pm, ordering everybody to lie down before they shot the deceased and another fan, also making away with KES 2,000 and a 32-inch TV set belonging to the pub.
A motorbike was however detained, being suspected to have been used by the assailants.
The Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinet has now issued a direction to all County Commanders to beef up security around clubs and restaurants screening the World Cup matches.
He has also urged club owners to have in place extra security measures to ensure safety of revelers during this World Cup season.
“The Inspector General has instructed all County Commanders to heighten surveillance around video parlours screening World Cup football matches with a view to ensuring that club owners and their patrons have requisite security measures in place”
“All prospective patrons shall be frisked before being granted admission. The measures are aimed at ensuring that football fans are protected from all types of security risks that include terrorism and other hazards. All club owners and their patrons are requested to co-operate with the Police as it is in the interest of their customers” said a police report seen by Kisumuinsyder.co.ke
