Gor Mahia downed visiting Zamalek of Egypt 4-2 in a six-goal thriller CCAF Confederation Cup Group D opening match at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Sunday, January 4th.
Oliech now follows in the footsteps of his late brother Steve Okumu whose lone goal handed Kogallo a 1-0 victory against Zamalek the last time the two sides faced off in Kenya wayback in 1998.
His late strike was the icing on the cake as Gor Mahia eventually outdid a much overated Zamalek in the first round of matches in Pool D.
“I dedicate this goal to the late Stephen Okumu. I knew I would score by employing the same style and celebrating in the same manner like my brother did, I am happy for myself, the fans and Gor Mahia,” said the 33-year-old star
Oliech who now believes that his experience across the globe can inspire the green army to better tiding this season led the team to receiving a cash reward from its patron Raila Odinga who was in attendance at the Sunday match.
The former Prime Minister was accompanied by Rarieda law maker Hon. Otiende Amollo who also topped up the amount with a KES 50,000 token.
The club’s chairman revealed that there are many more assisting the team’s management to motivate the players.
Gor will be visiting Vihiga United in their next league game on Wednesday, January 6th.
